One day after Hoosiers elected 16 new Democrats to the Indiana House, the caucus today reelected State Rep. Phil GiaQuinta (D-Fort Wayne) as Indiana House Democratic Leader. GiaQuinta, who first took the post in 2018, begins his fifth term as Leader.
He will serve alongside State Rep. Cherrish Pryor (D-Indianapolis) and State Rep. Carey Hamilton (D-Indianapolis), who were reelected as Minority Floor Leader and Minority Caucus Chair, respectively.
“Yesterday, Hoosiers voted for balance. House Democrats picked up 16 seats, and for the first time in 14 years, House Republicans will not hold a supermajority. I’m proud to welcome our new members to a caucus that now has a real voice at the Statehouse, and I’m grateful to Reps. Pryor and Hamilton for continuing to serve in leadership alongside me.
“We don’t take this moment lightly. Voters didn’t send us here to keep score. They sent us with a clear message: They’re tired of what years of one-party rule have given them. They want groceries, rent and utility bills they can afford. They want public schools that are fully funded. And they want data centers and Big Tech to pay their fair share of taxes.
“House Democrats are ready to get to work, and we extend a hand to our Republican colleagues to join us. Hoosiers have waited long enough.”
Caucus leadership positions took effect immediately following an internal election this afternoon.
The 125th General Assembly will convene for the ceremonial start of session, known as Organization Day, on Nov. 17.
